Reviews

Fake reviews.

Local SEO glossary · explained in plain English

Fake reviews: Fake reviews are reviews written by people who were not genuine customers, or written or paid for by the business or its competitors. They break platform rules and, in many countries, consumer protection laws.

Why it matters for local businesses

Platforms remove fake reviews and can restrict or suspend the profiles involved, and some regulators fine businesses that use them. Competitors posting fake negative reviews can also be reported for removal.

How to get it right

  1. Never buy, write or swap reviews.
  2. Report fake reviews on your profile through Google's reporting tools.
  3. Keep records of real customers so you can show a review is not genuine.

Common mistakes

  • Asking staff or family to leave reviews.
