Google Business Profile

Secondary categories.

Local SEO glossary · explained in plain English

Secondary categories: Secondary categories are the additional categories you can add to a Google Business Profile after the primary one. They help Google show you for related services you genuinely offer, such as "Emergency dental service" alongside "Dentist".

Why it matters for local businesses

Customers search for specific services. Secondary categories widen the set of searches you are eligible for, as long as they describe real services. Adding unrelated categories can dilute relevance and make your profile look less focused.

How to get it right

  1. Add only categories for services you actually provide.
  2. Match each secondary category with a service listing and a page on your website.
  3. Remove categories for services you have stopped offering.

Common mistakes

  • Adding every possible category in the hope of ranking for more.
  • Leaving out an important service that has its own category.
